Required Fumigant Properties

An ideal fumigant is expected to deliver not only high biological efficacy, but also controllability, measurability and commodity compatibility. Suitability is never assessed on killing power alone; the commodity, the packaging, the treatment enclosure, worker safety, environmental conditions and the applicable regulations are all considered together.

Effective penetration and even distribution

The fumigant must disperse adequately throughout the enclosed space and reach into commodity stacks, the gaps between packages and any void where the target pest may be harbouring. Achieving this depends not only on the physical properties of the gas, but also on the stowage pattern, the free air space, circulation fans and gas-tightness.

Adequate efficacy against the target pest

The fumigant selected must have a scientifically or officially accepted treatment schedule for the species and life stage of the target pest. Dosage rate, temperature and exposure period are never evaluated in isolation, but as interdependent treatment parameters.

Measurable and verifiable performance

Being able to measure initial, intermediate and final concentrations with suitable instruments is essential to demonstrating that the treatment was effective. Monitoring equipment must be appropriate for the fumigant in use, properly maintained and calibrated.

Commodity and packaging compatibility

A fumigant must not cause unacceptable quality loss, discolouration, corrosion, taint or residues above regulatory limits in the treated goods. Foodstuffs, seed, metals, electronic equipment, timber and other materials cannot be assessed in the same way.

Safety and regulatory compliance

• Suitability for safe transport and controlled application
• Ability to carry out leak checks and ambient air monitoring
• Ability to verify safe re-entry following aeration
• Compliance with the product label, the registration and occupational health rules
• Compatibility with the treatment schedule accepted by the destination country
