Grain and Pulse Fumigation

Grain and pulse commodities face the risk of insect infestation at every stage from production and storage through to transport and export. Pests found in wheat, barley, maize, rice, lentils, chickpeas, beans and similar products can reduce quality, cause weight loss and damage the commercial value of the consignment.

Atılım Fumigation provides controlled, professional fumigation services to free grain and pulse commodities of pests. Every treatment is planned according to the type and quantity of the commodity, the space it occupies, the storage conditions and the level of pest infestation.

What Is Grain and Pulse Fumigation?

Grain and pulse fumigation is a professional control method used to bring stored product insect pests and all of their life stages under control. Because the fumigant is released under controlled conditions inside an enclosed, gas-tight space, the treatment aims to reach pests even in the parts of the commodity stack that are difficult to access.

The treatment can be carried out in silos, depots, bonded warehouses, ship holds, containers or on commodity stacks that have been properly sheeted under tarpaulin. The method and the treatment process are determined by specialist teams according to the characteristics of the space and the intended use of the commodity.

Which Commodities Can Be Treated?

Grain and pulse fumigation can be applied to the following main commodity groups:

  • Wheat, barley, oats and rye
  • Maize, rice and other cereal products
  • Lentils, chickpeas, beans and peas
  • Flour, bran and similar processed cereal products
  • Animal feed and feed raw materials
  • Bulk and packaged agricultural products for import or export

Since every commodity has its own structure and storage requirements, a detailed assessment before treatment is of great importance.

Why Should Grain and Pulses Be Fumigated?

Stored product pests can multiply rapidly under suitable temperature and humidity conditions. Without timely intervention, the commodity can suffer boring damage, breakage, dust formation, weight loss, a drop in quality and a loss of commercial value. Because pests may be inside the kernels or deep within the stack at various stages of development, surface treatments alone often prove insufficient.

A professional fumigation treatment aims to achieve:

  • control of stored product pests,
  • a reduction in commodity losses,
  • protection of quality and commercial value,
  • a safer storage process,
  • support for the plant health requirements of import and export procedures.

A Professional and Controlled Treatment Process

Grain and pulse fumigation carried out by Atılım Fumigation consists of survey, planning, preparation of the area, gas-tightness checks, treatment, gas monitoring and ventilation stages. Throughout the process the working area is kept under control and the necessary safety measures are applied.

Once the specified exposure period has elapsed, the atmosphere is checked with suitable measuring instruments. After safe conditions have been confirmed, authorised personnel give clearance for the area to be returned to use.
