Ship Hold Fumigation

Professional Pest Control for Cargo Carried by Sea

Ship hold fumigation is a professional treatment method used to protect grain, pulses, feed raw materials and similar bulk commodities stowed in a vessel to guard against pest organisms. The treatment is carried out under controlled conditions, with the structure of the hold and the characteristics of the cargo assessed beforehand.

In sea freight, commodities may remain in closed holds for long periods. Insects and other pest organisms present within the cargo can multiply during the voyage, leading to a loss of product quality, commercial losses and additional inspection procedures at the destination. Ship hold fumigation helps protect the cargo throughout the voyage and supports a safer shipment.

Why Is Ship Hold Fumigation Important?

Pests found in bulk agricultural commodities are not confined to one part of the cargo; they may also be present at different points within the hold. The treatment therefore has to be planned with the volume of the hold, the quantity of cargo and the stowage arrangement all taken into account.

Professional ship hold fumigation delivers:

  • Comprehensive control of the pests present within the cargo,
  • Protection of product quality and commercial value,
  • A reduced risk of pests multiplying during the voyage,
  • Support in preventing cross-infestation,
  • Support for import and export procedures,
  • Safer delivery of the commodities to their destination.

Which Cargoes Can Be Treated?

Ship hold fumigation can be applied to a range of bulk commodities once the characteristics of the cargo and the requirements of the shipment have been assessed:

  • Wheat, barley, maize and other cereals,
  • Pulses of all kinds,
  • Animal feed and feed raw materials,
  • Oilseeds,
  • Dried agricultural products,
  • Other bulk cargoes assessed as suitable by our specialist team.

Every commodity differs in its physical structure, temperature, moisture content and stowage density. For this reason the method to be applied, the transport conditions and the safety measures must be assessed for each individual cargo.

How Is the Treatment Carried Out?

Before the treatment, the structure of the ship hold, the type and quantity of cargo and the prevailing conditions are inspected. Hatch covers, connection points and gas-tightness are checked, and a suitable treatment plan is prepared.

Once the necessary safety zones have been established, the fumigation is carried out by trained and licensed personnel. Throughout the process, gas levels in and around the hold are monitored with appropriate measuring equipment. After the treatment, the required aeration and inspection steps are completed; the hold is not returned to use and cargo is not discharged until safe conditions have been verified.

Ship hold fumigation should be planned in coordination with the ship's officers, port operations teams and other parties involved, with the safety requirements in force taken into account.
