Why Fumigation Matters

Pests are not found only on the visible surface of a commodity. They can hide between packaging layers, in the centre of stacked cargo, inside machinery cavities and in the cracks of wooden material. Because the gas disperses throughout an enclosed space, fumigation helps bring hard-to-reach areas under controlled treatment.

It limits product loss and quality deterioration

Stored product pests can cause weight loss, breakage, contamination, off-odours, heating and a decline in commercial quality. Identifying the problem early and applying the right fumigation plan helps prevent the infestation from spreading to other lots and reduces the economic loss.

It supports export and biosecurity requirements

Countries may apply quarantine measures on a commodity or pathway basis in order to protect their own agriculture and natural ecosystems from foreign pests. Under seasonal risk programmes such as BMSB, or for certain plant products, an approved treatment together with correct certification can be one of the basic conditions for shipment.

An incomplete treatment, the wrong method or faulty documentation can lead to delays at the port, re-treatment, additional inspection, redirection of the export or rejection of the consignment.

Success depends on professional application

Fumigation is a high-risk specialist operation. Its effectiveness depends on selecting the correct fumigant, on gas-tightness, temperature, exposure period, concentration monitoring and controlled aeration. For this reason the operation must be carried out only by trained personnel, with calibrated equipment and suitable personal protective equipment.
