What is Fumigation?

Definition of Fumigation: Provide a chemical gas (fumigant) (at certain temperature or quantity) into a closed environment and keep it in the environment for certain period, in order to kill the bugs (in egg, larva, nymph, pupa and adult phases) and other pests.

Purpose and Importance of Fumigation: It aims at removing harmful factors from any and all plant and animal based products and other materials, and preventing the destruction and loss of products from such factors. Fumigation is the last remedy applied where the fight by using other chemicals is difficult or impossible. However, there are many pros and cons of this method.

The positive sides of fumigation are its application on the product directly; penetration to the farthest places in the application area and homogenous spreading therein; application to large quantity of products in very short time; low costs and labor requirement; and effectiveness on all biological phases. These positive sides of fumigation provide significant convenience in both exports and imports preventing entrance of harmful factors into the country in alive forms at all biological phases, and ensuring the clean products at the level desired by the buyer.
